Dave,

If (and only if) the lenses and reflectors on your 5KT are in GOOD shape
(minimal pitting, no flaking and SHINY reflectors) one cheap alternative
(aside from auxiliary lamps, under the bumper) would be to convert from
9004 bulbs to 9007 bulbs. Keep the wattage the same, the electricals
can't
handle it. 9007 bulbs filaments are oriented differently from 9004, so
the
low beam "improves" somewhat, the high beam remains useless. You will
need to swap the yellow and white wire connections at the bulb connector
to make them work right, and do some re-aiming. Also, relays to power
the main bulbs will help tremendously over the stock power from the
switch,
plus it will extend the life of the pain in the butt to replace column
switch.
Finally, believe it or not, I wired the front marker lamps with relays to
the high
beam and used 50W marker bulbs. Helped in Hi beam mode (which shows
how pathetic the stock set-up is), but not a set-up I'd use in rural
areas as
the socket cannot take extended runs at 50W. Ultimately, I gave up and
got
Euros anyway, as Huw suggests.
