I-5 motor: Gasket sealer or forget about it???

How much the prodigious amounts of blue silicone gasket sealer had to do
with the failure of this engine I don't really know.

Note the spun bearing bottom left and the major damage to the crank, block
and thrust bearing in the top right of the last picture.
