I would suspect something fuel/electrical, but here is a slim chance
answer. I had the same thing happen to my VW GTI with a 1.8l solid
lifter engine. I had an aftermarket high lift camshaft. On the way
home from work one day while driving at a steady speed it just lost
power. After that even floored in neutral it would not rev past a
certain RPM. Don't remember the exact RPM, but it was somewhere around
3000. I limped home and the same thing the next day. I was running
programable EFI at the time and I sent it back to the manufacturer. It
tested out fine. I checked everything still had the same problem.
Finally I swapped the camshaft as it had a lifetime warrentee. After
that it revved like a banshee to 8000 rpm under full load like it used to.

Like I said a long shot. I have never heard of this happening to anyone
else, but I guess it is possible.
