crank seal - NEW Question!!!

Well...
The job is done. I had to make the crank locking tool, because the
impact wouldn't take it apart. I used a piece of stainless pipe (3")
about 2.5" wide.
I then cut a slot in it, and kept shrinking it until I had the right OD.
Then I cut the overlap, and welded it from the inside, cut the notch,
welded on a piece of solid stock, and slid it into place.
Worked like a charm. Used the garage floor to hold it from turning.
The crank seal came out with a little coaxing (used one of the seal
removing tools, looks like a small hammer, but with a hook on each end).
Installed the new seal, belt, tensioner, cam seal (removed the same as
the crank), and that was it. 2 hours including making the tool. One
thing I didn't do was remove (loosen) the water pump. I was not
planning on replacing it, so I simply pulled the old belt off the cam
pulley, and re-installed the new belt on the cam pulley last. The
tension was right, IMO. I could turn the belt 90'. It was a good
afternoon. The beer stayed cold, and the garage was warm.
Btw, it was definitely time to replace the belt...it broke while
examining it after removal. All I did was fold it flat to see how deep
the cracks were. Sure glad it didn't do it while I was in ontario
getting my daughter last week.
Thanks for all the emails about the job and such.
Brian

Subject: crank seal - NEW Question!!!

i will be changing the timing belt next week, and i received all the
necessary items today. i got the belt, idler, idler stud, water pump
o-ring, and the crank seal. the job seems to be straight forward, but i
have a question about the seal i received. it is a soft piece of rubber,
no casing, spring, or anything else resembling a usual seal. is this
the right piece, or did they send me the wrong item? i read alot about
the headaches of removing the seal, and if this is the one, i cant see
the difficulty.
also, is the cam seal simular, or is it a normal looking seal, as i plan
to do that one at the same time

thanks again
brian
