A6 clutch

Yesterday, in my search for a replacement for my '95 90 Sport Quattro,
I test drove a 2001 A6 2.7T with the six-speed manual. Great car, but
the clutch felt (for lack of a better term) weird. It was next to
impossible to drive the car smoothly; I'm used to adjusting to
different clutches but never could get used to this one. It just seemed
grabby. Is this a trait of A6 clutches, or signs that something is
wrong with the car (such as needing a new clutch)?
Thanks,
Mike
