A6 2.7T questions

After a couple of years as an involuntary Saab owner, I am contemplating 
returning to the Audi fold. I have narrowed the choice to the A6 2.7T. I 
was convinced I wanted the S4, but when I drove it, it was just too small 
for me and the kids (but I loved the car). As I would be looking for a 
2000/2001 I wondered what problems I should be looking for?
Are there any weak points or common failures to be aware of?
What reputation has this engine/turbo established for longevity and robustness?
Is mileage an issue?
Thoughts on Auto verses Manual transmission? I would really prefer a 
manual, but they are much rarer than the automatics. How bullet proof is 
the auto box?
What about chipping? I am hearing good things about APR, any advice on them 
or alternatives?
Is the engine in the S4 the exact same engine, or are there subtle differences?

I am in the process of trolling through the archives, but it's a long process.
