Steering rack questions

I have seen a lot of these with some "axial" play in the rack itself, 
which doesn't seem to to translate to anything noticeable at the 
steering wheel.  After checking the four mounting bolts and the 
associated sheet metal, playing with the backlash might help.

Most of these racks have a "rounded-diamond" shaped little metal cover 
over where the steering shaft enters the rack body (right over the 
pinion area), as I recall, under that is some sort of adjustable thingie 
(I don't recall exactly how it was set up).  I once adjusted my 90Q to 
have no axial play, it made everything too stiff, when things had 
"proper" play and feel again, the axial play was back again.
