In the old days one used to do this measuring with cigarette rolling 
paper; if it can be pulled out from the contact spot without crashing 
it, its perfect. These days Plastigauge seem to offer more precise 
measurement, but as someone mentioned before, if you want to change just 
bearings and it wasn't making any noise before, you'll be fine with 
reusing old shim sets, at least as a good starting point for measuring.
