What makes you think that you need tie rods? Because the monkey lad said so?
You better have a look at them first.
Have someone turn the steering wheel left and right while you put your hand
on the tie rod end and feel/look for movement/looseness.
Jack up car, take off front wheels, and have another good look. Have someone
turn the steering wheel left and right while you look at the tie rod ends
for sloppy fit.
Are the grease boots cracked/split?

SJ,
You make a good point. I have, as yet, not checked myself. I decided to take it for an alignment after noticing that the steering wheel was off center a little. Also, whilst driving on a straight road, the steering wheel seems to need constant adjustment to keep the car tracking straight. Another thing I noticed is a groaning noise when turning the steering wheel in low speed turns. I'm pretty sure that this is not belt related since I changed all these about 8 months ago.
Anyway, I'll follow your advice and take a good look before replacing.
Thanks.
