Nick-
Short answer is "no." The typical air-fuel ratio gauges simply
show the narrowband output from the stock sensor, it is not accurate
enough to really see what the air-fuel ratio is.
You need a wideband O2 sensor to get an accurate measure- this is why
you tune on a dyno with a wideband O2 sensor and datalogging.
There are some relatively inexpensive kits to allow for a wideband O2
sensor to output to an external gauge as well as feed a narrowband
output
for the ECU, allowing one bung in the downpipe to serve two purposes.
I know that AEM is one company that has this type of equipment for sale-
there are others as well, some far more expensive.
I plan on getting a digital air-fuel gauge fed by a wideband O2 sensor
with a big red warning light when it goes lean, hopefully some warning
of bad things before you get meltdown. That info and an EGT gauge will
complete my instrumentation.
BTW, this type of setup will be in the $350+ range, even without
datalogging.
The Bosch wideband sensor is around $85-90 alone.
