Cetane rating is also a major issue for modern performance high speed
diesels. In Europe minimum cetane ratings typically run in excess of 50
- in North America its closer to 35.
VW diesels have been equipped with one-way catalytic converters since
the introduction of the 1.6L Eco Diesel in 1991 to reduce NOx (and to a
lesser extent particulate emissions.)
However, more advanced exhaust treatment processes do require the use of
low sulphur fuel (15ppm in 2006 in North America, although 10ppm will be
in use by next year in Europe)
