One thing, if it's in good shape you will most likely enjoy driving it a lot
more than your '95.
They have the same layout and close in size (90q v6 is larger) however the
few 100 lbs makes a world of difference in terms of handling and overall
driving enjoyment.

Look for, signs of butchery, body damage (rust/collision) and overall
mechanical condition.
If it drives nice and is smooth you can't go wrong with these cars.

The old Volvo has possibly reached the end. It's time to get her through the
emissions tests for the last time (cars over 20 years old are exempt) and
I'm not sure I want to put the old girl through the humiliation. Perhaps
more to the point, I'm ready for something different for my backup/utility
vehicle.

I can't help myself. There is a 1986 4000CS Quattro for sale locally at what
appears to be a reasonable price. I'd like to have a look at it in the next
couple of days, but I'm quite ignorant WRT these cars. I'm hoping that the
list can offer some insights as to the more serious issues that I need to
consider... known problems/weaknesses, expensive repairs, etc. I will have
my Audi-owner, mechanic buddy George with me for the inspection so I'm not
too concerned about the obvious items. I just thought I'd get some feedback
from this great resource.
