The red car sold at the Monterey auction is the one that was at the Imperial
Palace, and had been listed for sale for quite some time on both their site
and on collectorcartraderonline.com Curiously, about 3 or 4 weeks ago, the
price was raised from 75K to 85K, probably coinciding with when it was added
to the list of offerings at Monterey. There are still plenty of pics of the
car on both sites if I'm not mistaken
Regarding the 'rollover.' It's not 'quite' a rumor, as one of Frank's red
ones was involved in a accident. VA City Hillclimb back in like '93 or '94?
Driver (who was a reporter, although also a somewhat accomplished driver in
his own right) slid off and hit a telephone pole, but he was actually doing
a timed run if memory serves, not just taking the car for a spin. Damage
was to the driver's door and roof only. I believe the article said that
since that part is interchangeable with the 4000 (the only body part that
is) it was a relatively minor fix compared with what it could have cost had
he hit anywhere else. There was a writeup about it in both the quattro
quarterly from that time period, and I believe in a mainstream publication.
( European Car ?) It has been repaired and restored faithfully, and having
seen all of his cars at MH99, I can vouch at least for it's condition at
that point. Surely someone here has seen these cars at club events since.
Either way, the buyer got what looks to be a fine automobile, surely the
envy of the quattro fanatic community. There is a green one in the DC area
that is I believe the only Malachite car in the US, and it's by far my
favorite color that I've seen in person. The burgundy metallic car for sale
in Geneva Switzerland for 80K Euros is my favorite color seen overall.
