I don't think you will find anyone reporting success with that, because
unlike the blower which is on one end of the heater box, the core is right
smack in the middle, glued in. If you were able to get out the core without
heater box removal (sawzall?), you would have big problems sealing up the
large holes created by whatever method was used to get it out.

along with failed blower
1988 GTI 16v, 242k, original blower and core AFAIK
