Thanks for all the replies. I have formally replaced numerous cv axels on various 5000s that I have owned over the years however I no longer have the place, proper tools and the time to do the repairs myself. I recall making some bushings on a lathe to press out the axels. I called my local shop which specializes in german cars mainly audi and porsche. They quoted me $260 to put a new boot on. At pepboys I can get a new axel with a lifetime warranty for about $110 and the installation they quoted me was for replacing 2 axels therefore its probably $75 in labor not $150. Why does it seem that the local shops seem to try to screw you if you have a german vehical. Does anybody know of a good shop in MD? I live in Damascus MD and work in Rockville MD.
BTW I had a overflow tank replaced at the local shop 3mo ago and they told me that there was a slight rip in one of the boots and I probably had 6mo before I needed a new one. I started feeling something a little askew on the front and thought it was the balancing on the tires so I brought it to pepboys for balancing and tire rotation. This is when they told me that the cv boot was ripped and I seen that just about all of the axel grease on the brake calibre.
Thanks
Frank
