Chris-
We had a similar requirement, although new was a must.
Having looked at a few vehicles, the allroad was out- questionable
2.7T reliability, uncertain air suspension (I'm personally really not
fond of this at all), unattractive styling.
We ended up with a Volvo V70R- decent compromise- lots of cargo space,
very comfortable, very stiff chassis, more than adequate power.
If you can afford the latest P2 chassis V70R, I'd get one- used.
They're total sales dogs, you should be able to find one for fairly
cheap relative to the new price. Our local dealer had 3 in stock, we
bought one, the other two are still there now (we got ours Memorial
Day weekend).
I think if the A6 3.0 is adequate for your needs, that is also a very
viable option. They respond well to some select modifications- 17" or
18" wheels and good shocks matched to the springs.
Had it been totally my choice, I would have chosen the Infiniti FX45
w/ tech package, though- that 4.5L V-8 really rips. Put a Magnaflow
dual 2.5" exhaust on it and it would be Ferrariesque. Rear-biased AWD
system is a lot more fun, too- the 65% rear bias on the STi makes it
step out under power like a rear-driver.
