I'm pretty sure I trashed a transmission in my 300ZX by putting in some
fluid labeled GL-4/GL-5. It takes GL-4. Dino GL-4 is available at your
local NAPA dealer, it wasn't available solo (without also being GL-5
labeled) at the large chain auto parts stores. It didn't take long at all
to lose the affected gear's synchro's entirely (like less than a couple of
weeks.) So my guess would be bad synchros due to age not bad fluid. My
experience with transmissions is that once they are doing the bad thing, a
fluid change isn't going to help, no matter how good the fluid. YMMV.

Looking up info in a service manual, it states you 87 5k takes GL-4* (84-86
takes GL-4 without a star) the star indicates Special Audi Synthetic GL-4.
