Porche 944 question

Ben,
As others, I am no expert, but have 2 items to point out:
1. A mechanic I used a few times at one time had one in his driveway.
"Oooh...Porsche!", says I. "That ain't no Porsche....more a Chrysler than a
Porsche" says he...followed by an explanation only someone well versed in
Porschelore would follow.
2. There's a 944 for sale at a house 2 doors away from me. One of those
side-of-the-road-sporting-a-generic-"FOR SALE"-sign cars. I've seen
numerous people looking at the car, even one group of people that showed up
with a huge rig towing a race trailer with a 944 race car depicted on the
side. Each time, they can't get the car to start, and the prospective
buyers depart - they invariably come out after the people have left and jump
it to get it running, and then rev the snot out of it (duuuh..."TAKE THAT,
car"). The car has been sitting there for over a year.
If I were looking for a Porsche, I'd be looking for a 911.....like Martin
Pajak's.....
Cheers!

I'm contemplating getting a '87 Porche 944 S(non-turbo) 5 speed trans. It
is in good shape but the Red paint has oxidized and needs major compounding
or maybe paint, but I did not see any rust and no noticaeable dings. Major
mechanicals are in good condition, but need some exhaust repairs, timing
belt, window switch fix, among some other minor by my standards fixes. The
car ran and drove well and appears to have been well maintained.
I'm trying to see what kind of price these tend to go for. Anyone know?
Any major caveats? Once fixed to near pristine condition, what could I get
for it without major haggling?
Ben
