944, now V8 transplants

I'm with you on the "reason" why one would want a Renegade transplant. I'd
go "whole hog" however, and stick the SBC in a li'l 914.

As far as old 928's, they hold up incredibly well. Almost too well--sort of
like our Audis (hey, it's Audi content!). Especially the pre-'87 / pre-s4
models. You can buy one for about the same price as a Vespa, but
unfortunately maintenance costs are the same as a new 911 GT2. But the
chassis, body, lack-o-squeak factor, etc., are all excellent.

In 2000, my dad bought a well-maintained 1980 928 for $3500 w/170k mi. on
it. It was beautiful and tight. He drove it for about 25k mi., put on a
Borla muffler for fun, and new alternator brushes. This thing was
bullettproof. It went like stink, had that addictive v8 rumble, and was
rattle-free. Of course, the giant dash was also flat-surface-free, the dash
brake light permanently illuminated--c'mon, it was an old German
car...Anyway, sold it this fall for $5,500. So for those w/audi-like
patience, old 928's can be great fun.

To the ORIGINAL poster, check on 944 info in "excellence" magazine. It's THE
source for all Porsche pricing, maintenence, etc. Also lurk on the 944
digest from rennlist.com. Old 944's are also cheap fun. (cheap to buy that
is...)
