Porche 944 question

I appreciate the feedback and answers I got from everyone. I did get the car. Looked it over, test drove it then went home to mull it over. Knowing there were a few others trying to get money for the car, I went to the bank. Ran a compression check (210 PSI on all four cyl.) and drove it home.

Paint compounded right out and pretty much looks like a new car now and interior is in near pristine condition. Needs a few things, but nothing major from what I can tell and the clutch and timing belts have been addressed fairly recently. The car was garage kept.

I'll probably be putting it up for sale in the spring if I don't become attached to it and that is not likely because I intend to stay the course with my '83 UrQ.

Cheers!

Ben

  On the contrary.

Out here on the left coast.............. I think the 944 is a great car and can be a very reliable daily driver, You mentioned a 87 944 s which would mean its 16v car.. I know those cars have been very problematic, if the timing belt fails all hell brakes loose, more so than in a 8v 944. Because of the design of the cylinder head and the dual cams. When the belt brakes you are pretty much buying a complete cylinder head... ( Not in-expensive).

I have had several 944 over the years and one has logged over 280k miles on the original engine...... with regular maintenance.. And gone through one clutch. The car is currently being run in the NASA 944 cup series...........

I think the biggest pitfall with these cars is that they can be had for pennies on the dollar and most people think that extends to the parts and the labor involved in maintaining the vehicle over time. It just doesn't ... The 944 was way ahead of its time in terms of engineering and design........

I would suggest trying to find a car with service records and a good history.. The difference between a neglected car and a good driving car is usually no more than $1000-$1500 at times.

As with any Porsche find the newest car you can find and afford. The 944 evolved into a better car over the years.. I would look at getting anything later than 86 model year.
Make sure the clutch has been serviced. the timing belt waterpump and tensioner have been replaced along with all the front end seals......... Lastly see if the heater control works becouse they are pricey also.. Other than that service it regularly and you will enjoy many happy satisfied miles......
