Just for clarification: you can legally import a vehicle 25 years old or
older and not have to make it conform to DOT/EPA regulations? So I could
bring in a vehicle that was never intended for the US market and not have to
have it modified to meet codes for, say, 1972, when it was manufactured? If
so, what's involved? Where can I get more information?

Steve is correct here, currently the only Iltis that you can legally
import for on road use are the true german made 79s and 80s, here in a few
days, the 81s will be legal. (DOT/EPA exemption on 25 year old vehicles
by manufacture date).
