2 years ago we were visiting family in KY when a bad ice storm hit. We
had no power for about 40 hours. It was starting to get a little cold
in the house. We did however still have city water pressure and the gas
water heater still worked fine. That made everyone's day. I went down
and looked at it and there were no wires going to it. It just relied on
a pilot light and a mechanical thermostat.

Of course here at our house we have a well and and electric water
heater...so I guess we would be in trouble.
