Wow,  I had no idea you are 82.  :)  As for the 4K miles, my guess
is that the 4K miles is over 12 months [1], she's never changed the
oil (letting acids build), and only drives it 1 or 2 miles at a time, so
the oil never heats up to burn of water condensation.  Two things
that a very bad for the engine.

I'd rather have a one year old car with 30K miles on it than a 1 year
old car with 4K miles on it.

[1] My fiancee's mother, 62, has an old Chevy.  She put 182 miles on
it last year. That's right, less than 200 miles. And most of that was when
her grandson borrowed the car one weekend.
