I had the same problem. Instead of a VW garage, I took the car to an
independent garage and asked them to save my parts (my pump was replaced).
My oil with filter had been changed regularly with Dino oil.
Pan and pump were relatively clean just coated in a thin reddish gum,
but the screen was clogged with very small hard granules. The mechanic
thought that they were plastic or hardened neopreen. He thought some seals were
deteriorating. Now I am thinking that this was due to the cooking of the oil.
My stop-engine light would go on and then go off when I stopped the car and
restarted. I believe this is because it gave the screen a chance to let go of
some of the granules, but basically the screen was pretty much clogged .
The job cost $700. So far the car is running okay. Hope no damage elsewhere.
The clicking/ticking sound stopped or is not as loud now when I let off the
accelerator.
VW dealer attributed the sound to a broken spring in the turbo waste gate.
