So should there be a recall so that dealers can inspect for a sludge problem
and provide ONE "free" synthetic oil change?
They did that with the Audi 5000s and 80s gear lube in the auto
transmissions. Then installed a sticker somewhere on the vehicle.
I even know of an Audi 80 owner that received a new transmission since he
was never notified of a recall and his transmission went bad.

After this oil change recall, the warranty could remain in effect if the
owner continued to use syn oil.

The problem is very simple, imho, and in two parts:
(1) what oil is now required for us to use (pure synthetic)
(2) what oils VWoA officially, in their owner's manual or posted at a VW
dealer or on their website, told us we could use BEFORE now.

Since among the recommended oils before now were dino grades down to _x30,
they have to warranty problems when we used these oils. The fact VWoA NOW,
years later, state that the 1.8t engine must use oil from a more restricted
subset of the original choices permitted, can't get them off the hook for
problems created up to now. We should not stand for being told otherwise.

Phil's post addressed the first problem but not the second. Its not our
problem that VW was wrong to recommend we use dino _x30 oil (among others),
its theirs. Its not our problem if our owner's manual was written by
marketing types and not engineers, its theirs. Even though some of us
decided we'd better use synthetic before now, VW has to stand by people who
followed their official guidelines.

It is obviously counter productive for us to make personal attacks on this
list, even when we have had infuriating personal experiences, because it
creates more problems rather than solving the one we're concerned about. I'm
fortunate to have a usually reliable dealer nearby, but I'm keeping my
fingers crossed if I have a sludge problem down the road...
