Audi 100 Questions

Hi all,

I bought a 1986 Audi 100CS Quattro last week and it has been running
well so far, except for a few problems.

When it is cold it won't idle at all, I have to hold my foot on the
accelerator for the first couple of minutes. It is also hard to start,
it takes quite a bit of cranking before it fires, on my other Audi it
starts on the first turn of the engine.

Also, the other day, while I was driving down the motorway, it got hot
and started to knock, but hasn't done it since so I am not sure what
caused it.

I had a look around in the engine compartment and fixed the breather
hose which was all rotted out. All of the other hoses seem fine.

How do I check the mixture on this engine? My 90 has a plug that I can
use to check the duty cycle for the ISV, but I can't find a plug on
this engine. Do I just use a fuel air meter? I will have to also check
the timing at the same time and change the plugs and air filter as
well.

I am a bit concerned about the engine knock- anyone have any ideas what
would cause it? The power dropped right off at the same time.

TIA,
Ben Doughney
