here is what a "service advisor" on the passat list has to say about the
sludge issue..apparently its not a problem in the Golfs/jettas equipped with the
1.8T, just the B5 Audi A4's and Passats..

Hello again Folks,

I've posted this before but I'll post it again for those of you who
missed the original post.

First, the "Oil Sludge" problem is only seen in the 1.8T's as installed
in the B5 chassis (Audi A4 and Passat). There is no oil sludge problem
with the 2.8 Liter V6 in the A4 or Passat or the 1.8T installed in the
A4 chassis (Jetta, Golf, New Beetle, Audi A3 and TT). The oil sludges
because of heat and low capacity in this motor. The newer B5's have
more oil in them.

As I've noted before the major difference is the oil pan and oil
capacity. In the B5 engine the oil pan is real close to the oil pickup,
so any sludge that forms in the pan has the possibility of obstructing
the oil pump screen. The new oil filter (which is significantly larger)
adds to the total oil capacity of this engine. The A4 chassis engines
have a much deeper oil pan and hold at least a quart more of oil.

Regarding the turbo of this engine. First, any comparison to early
turbos (Saab, Volvo and others) is not a valid one. This turbo is oil
cooled, water cooled and air to air intercooled. There is no need to
let the turbo cool off when you shut the engine off. The water
continues to circulate (by convection) and there is a small oil
reservoir which prevents the turbo bearings from oil starvation. The
previous turbos discussed only had oil cooling, and once the engine was
turned off would "coke" the bearings, and eventually destroy them.
These earlier engines are where all the "horror stories" come from. I
have not seen any turbo failures related to "cokeing". I have seen
turbo failures due to oil starvation form outside sources.
