Exhaust manifold on 80q...

Although my experience is with a Coupe (82), they are similar enough,
that I would say "yes":

You see here that I swapped the EM with the engine in place.  Big caveat
- the engine was only in the car a year or two, and had had all the EM
studs cleaned up, so they undid fairly easily.

Yes, you'll have to get the IM out of the way or you'll go insane.  Be
careful with those long allen head bolts holding it to the head - clean 
them out first and try to avoid stripping them.

> Could you remove the passenger front fender and get to it?

That won;t help, the "inner" fender will still be there.  You might want 
to yank the airbox/fuel distributor for some more elbow room.  depends 
on how fast you want to work, I guess.
