My 87 5kcstq had the same problem. I bought a used boot on Ebay, 
specifically asking if it had all 6 tabs. The guy said yes, but when it 
arrived, two corners on one side were missing, so the end result was the 
same.

I used a black silicon goo like is used to instal windshields. I just 
put a blob on each corner, attached it, and let it sit for a day. It's 
been several months since, and it hasn't come up once. But I'm pretty 
sure that when I need to get it off I'll be able to get a scraper under 
there and be okay.

I don't know if the *new* boots come with rings or not. Some I saw were 
just the leather part, but I don't know about the others available.
