question about lifter tapping

Brady,

I must admit, I too love to use pure synthetic motor oil, I used it in my
former car, an 89 Ford Probe GT with no problems (from 89,000 miles to
210,000 miles) such as leaks, oil consumption (about 1/2 quart every 5,000
miles) etc. But when I purchased my 90 Audi 80 a little over a year ago
with 102,000 miles I again went to Mobil 1 15w40 synthetic. To my
astonishment the rear seal started to pour oil out after driving it about
2,000 miles. Now I am exaggerating the "pouring out" a little bit, but it
started to leak a quart and a half every 1,000 miles. So I went back to some
of the "high mileage" dinosaur juice and it slowd up to a tiny drip. No more
puddles in the drive. Now that I have purchased a 90 V8 Quattro with
103,000 miles on it I am scared to try synthetic in it. I know it would be
the best thing I could run in it, but I really loathe thinking about having
to pull the tranny out to put in a new rear main sea,l or to replace any
lower seals for that matter. I am glad you are having excellent luck with
synthetics, and I hope a lot of others are having the same luck, but I have
been frightened away from using synthetic in a vehicle that has not been
running it since about 10,000 miles or so, at least for now.

Cheers for now!
Kyle
