In simple terms stainless is weaker than plain carbon steel and far
weaker than higher alloy steels like 4130 (Chromoly). Most alloys like
the common 300 series tend to gall badly, but this would not really be a
problem in this application as you have bearing inserts to deal with the
sliding. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I seem to
remember that it is not terrific in impact loading either. That would
tend to be a problem in this application.
I am with you on the 4130 or similar material.
