For all its worth, it is the axial bearing that fails, which is only
push fitted into the housing, and usually fails because its unprotected
from the elements. In US, one should be able to find same size axial
bearing with seal protection, press it into the housing, and since is
held by six or so tiny notches, some appropriate Loctite should be used.
Here in Switzerland is very hard to find such item, so I pack it up with
synthetic grease, and use 3-5 mm washer made of closed cell polyurethane
foam, which moulds itself to the surface of the bearing and
surroundings, and prevents moisture and debris entry very well. It would
interesting to all, if a lister who knows a good machine shop to take
the old unit there, and try to source it from various manufacturers
catalogues. The protected version of axial bearing is widely used in
industry, and it shouldn't be hard to find. I am sure that many of us
would be interested in such find.
HTH and regards,
Ado
