silly question

I have a friend in the recycling industry specializing in Audi's, who has
been doing it for 8+ years, says the Audi's up to '96-97 were of a higher
quality than the newer cars. Parts from yours ('88) and like mine will last
longer than the cars Audi is building now.
Just his opinion from the wrecking yard with no scientific/engineering
study. And not to enrage anyone with newer cars.

Subject: silly question
This probably sounds like a silly question, so pardon me, but why would a
1998 A4 1.8T engine need rebuilding?
I'm still going on my original '88 (normally aspirated) engine, track
miles and all.
Have things changed that much?
