95 A6 head gasket

My local dealership has advised me that I need a
new headgasket on my 95 A6q 2.8 (12v).  Car was
brought in for an oil change and because the oil
light came on intermittently, which I believe is
most likely caused by a failing pressure sending
unit. I'm not losing significant oil, and there is
no oil in the water or water in the oil.
o Is there any way a head gasket leak like this
  could cause an oil pressure problem?
o What is a reasonable price for a head gasket R&R?
  (he wants $1400)
o If I have this job done, what else should I do
  (I assume new timing belt, even though old one
  is only 3 yrs/30k miles old)
