I have a page covering my buildup of my 3" exhaust on my web site, but 
mine is not stainless.  I did do this before putting the turbo on.  It 
was almost undrivably loud.  Now I used high flow muffliers (read see 
through) so more restrictive muffliers might give different results.  At 
that time the 3" went right up to collector on the downpipe.  I even 
have a 3" cat.

I would not recommend 3" unless you have a turbo.  Even then in 
retrospect I think it is overkill.
