Not trying to hijack this, but anybody know whether it is possible to put the higher 5th from an earlier tranie into a ABV? I'd LOVE a taller 5th gear for a more sedate highway cruise...

That is correct. The QF tranny is cable and high gears (80 mph at 3k in
5th). The 3Z, which should be floating around in '84 MY cars has the
later lower gears (60 at 3k in 5th?) and is still cable operated. I've
been trying to get one for years - there were some on ebay a while back
(new ones!), but I guess I wasn't trying as hard as I thought. The ABV
is the same lower gear set but has a hydraulic clutch, from 85-87 (the
87.5 cgt has different output flanges, don't know if it still the same code)

Which do you have a problem with, the hydraulic part or the gear ratios?

As an upgrade? To upgrade what aspect of it? If you want lower gears
and cable operation, answer is above. If the owner likes the high gears
(lotsa highway miles, etc.), stay with what's in there.
As far as the hydraulic conversion, it shouldn't be a big deal - the
pedal cluster already has both the cable hook and a place for the master
pushrod, as I recall. Cut a hole in the firewall and mount the master,
hard hose to the slave, soft hose to the brake reservoir nipple for fluid.
