That is enough connections - all the coil needs is hot on one side and
ground on the other, and a way to keep lifting and reconnecting the
ground. The extra wire may very well be your tach signal or the like.

On VAG machines, brown is ground, period. In US house wiring, green is
the only color that is not "hot", white is neutral, all other colors are
hot. Two totally different color schemes.

I totally agree. The nature of those 5kt systems is such that
familiarity with other VAG n/a applications can only get you into trouble.
As someone else advised, you would be very well advised to run, don't
walk, to Scott Mockry's web site and read every word twice. While
you're reading, have your Bentley manuals on their way to you. With any
luck you'll have that ride up and running soon. One heck of a car, if
you like them big.
