Not to mention that not everyone uses a web browser or otherwise a
graphical utility that could display an image to read emails.

Personally, I use "elm" to read emails on Unix.  It's a text-only
reader.  Why?  It's lightweight, *fast*, and allows me to "consume"
and handle a large amount of emails very effciently compared to
a browser, and I am able to read emails directly over a dial-up
login session in a "terminal" or "telnet"-like session.  Sure, elm
has the ability to invoke an external image viewer when it detects
a MIME attachment containing an image, but that's usable only when I
am actually running elm on my graphical workstation.
