4kq diff lock vacuum lines

On 2 out of 2 4kqs the problem for me was the actuators themselves; the '86
had cracks in both and the front one on the '87 was chewed by mice. I
patched them all with JB Weld. The lines themselves are rubber segments
which are pushed over either the actuator nipples or the harder plastic
lines that run through the body.

The lines to/for the front pretty much come down from right above the
actuator unit, and slightly behind. It's all buried behind a heat shield
that has ~3/8" of accumulated oil and road grime over the bolts which secure
it. I found the easiest way to 'look' at it was to first get the lay of the
land with a mag light and an inspection mirror and then to really figure it
out using my fingers (eyes closed). It's fun.

The rear is easier; the lines come from towards the front of the car and
as I recall the shielding was easier to work with. On both my cars the ends
of the rubber hose sections were shot; Audi thoughtfully included enough
rubber line that a half-inch off each end was no problem.

I think the easiest way to check the system is first to make sure that
your lock-lights work (and that they verify locking), then use a mity-vac to
make sure the actuators are free and hold vacuum (on both sides). If that
all checks good, time to look for leaks. I started by cutting the
aforementioned half inch of rubber off _every_ rubber/hard plastic line
joint in the engine compartment.

  Good luck,
Robert
