5KTQW Conversion

I had an idea for a project (it may be a dumb one) and I wanted to get 
some feedback from the list before investigating it further...

I have an 87 Quattro Avant.  Had it for almost 6 years and it has been a 
great car.  It is still running well,  but showing signs of age.  
Rebuilding it was one option.  However I also have been interested in 
diesel cars.  The thought crossed my mind that it may be possible to get 
an I5 turbo diesel audi engine from a yard and transplant it into the Avant.

Is this a doable idea, and would I be sorry if I did it (as opposed to 
just redoing the gas engine)?  Any comments on the older Audi diesel I-5?
