I have seen kits for the VW cars to turn their cars into a 6 speed, and although I have looked, haven't seen one for the 5 cylinder. I'm just brainstorming right now, but I have a theory that might be cool if it's not TOO expensive.

I can't speak on the S4 swap but others have done that already. With VW
transmissions the factory 5 speed is really just a add on to the 4
speed. The two shafts are longer, two holes are put in the end of the 4
speed housing and a little add-on housing is put on the end to cover 5th
gear. You can actually change 5th on a VW without pulling the
transmission. (I tried this once on my 83 GTI and changed it back the
next week - you get used to the pep 4000 rpm at 70 mph offers).

The six speed kits just take this a step further with a larger add-on
housing and longer still shafts to hold the extra gears. Of course you
also have the shift forks and stuff to deal with.

The quattro transmission is quite a bit more complex. I would not say a
kit would be impossible (nothing is impossible), but it would not likely
be cost effective as the casing would have to be replaced IMHO.

You don't need more gears.... you just need more power :)
