Overheated-head knocking: need opinions on what to do.

If it sounds like someone is hitting the head with a
hammer, it's probably a bad rod bearing. You might
pull your oil filter and take it apart to see if you
have little metal flakes in there. So I take it you
drove a while with no coolant?
