Thanks for the replies! Here are my answers to your questions.
How long did the car run in the "overheated" state?
-I don't know. Unfortunately my wife was driving it when it happened
and can't remember when the light when on.
When you say the head is knocking what does this sound like? I am
visualizing something louder than lifter ticking.
-I know it is louder than a lifter, because I have replaced mine.
Is the car losing any coolant now?
-Not since I fixed the hose.
Have you checked the compression both cold and hot?
-No, I don't have compression tester.
Check for cracks in the EM and down pipe weld. I confused mine for bad
lifter noise. Usually changes as engine warms up.
-I'll check for that, but the sound did not change after the engine
warmed up.
If it sounds like someone is hitting the head with a
hammer, it's probably a bad rod bearing.
-I've heard a bad rod and it doesn't have that lower clunking metal
sound that I associate with it. But this was on a Volvo 240, maybe the
sound is different.
You might pull your oil filter and take it apart to see if you
have little metal flakes in there.
-That's a good idea, I'll have to look this weekend. I took the
dipstick out and there was no coolant mixed with it.
So I take it you drove a while with no coolant?
-Unfortunately, knowing my wife, I would have to say yes.
