Steve:
I could put those 18's (or sportec 19/20's) on the 4.2, debadge the 4.2 and
add a set of creatively decaled 928GTS4 brakes and fool you at 15 feet. I know
this, cuz it happened to me in Chicago. I know my audis, this one was the
best and funniest trick I've seen in a while. I even gave the guy the thumbs up
on the attempt, got me hook line and sinker. I'd venture that you have to be
REAL close to one (read the badge AND confirm the brakes) before I'd put any
money on the RS6 call. BTW, to get that 'RS' brake confirmation, you have to
be pretty much right next to the car, btdt.
Those that have driven the autobox know of what I speak. Those that
haven't... Don't. I'm not partial to big cars with sticks, especially if the engine
dictates no need. 80% of the 928's were sold as slushes. 90% of the time,
faster that the shifter dudes. Miss Piggy bucking between manual speed shifts
isn't pretty. BTST too many times (91 200's and urS4/6 included).
A well designed tip needs no excuse, and when 6speed qwik-tips becomes the
standard (BMW has it), the advantage vs manual shift will/is moot. Then again,
I prefer the autobox in the v8/A8 to the 5spd myself (yes I have a lot of seat
time in both - stock and tweeked). I'd rather add the power to an autobox
(with sport mode) on a big car anyday.

Touching only on the exterior comments here, I don't know, Scott. I've only
seen one and, while it didn't jump out at me as "There's an RS6!", it was
noticeable that it was different and NOT an A6 4.2 immediately. It was
several hundred feet away and on the move, and I had to follow it, family in
tow, to confirm my "...then it might/must be an RS6!" reaction. I would
think that most of us on this list could tell, and for me, I don't really
give a rat's ass about what the general public perceives...otherwise I
wouldn't have, as do you, an urq (...Is that the new Scirroco?) I wouldn't
be shelling out $80k ( cough, cough....right) for anyone but myself.
Now, if the seats aren't improved, that is a shortcoming. What's inside and
under the hood, and under the body, is what matters. And I'll also go on
record as preferring a stick anyday, but not having tried the "new" tranny,
I'm keeping an open mind. If you and the Don can live with it, I'm sure I
could, too.
