Rough running and misfire under acceleration

Colour me a believer!
All this talk about rough running especially when wet came at the right
time because my '87 5000CDTQ started acting up about 2 weeks ago. It
happened to be raining. I checked the distributor cap and rotor and they
looked dirty and worn so I replaced them. It seemed to run a bit
smoother, but still misfiring under acceleration so I bit the bullet and
ordered a set of Beru high tension leads.
Problem solved! Not only has the misfire disappeared, but it now idles
smoothly and runs smooth at all RPMs.
Question: how do you read the tachometer? There are only 3 minor bars
before 1000 RPM. Does that mean it is incremented 250 RPM per bar, or
does it start at 400? Anyway it idles at just above the 3rd bar which is
either 750 or 800. It used to idle at over 1000 RPM.
I wish I'd spent the Can $127.00 a few months ago, but this is a good
lesson.
Cheers
George
