Alright, I should attach my message to this subthread as well, just
for the sake of fairness.

I have a friend with a '02 WRX.  Headroom in the front seats is fine
for me (I'm 185 cm) but the back seats suck (yeah, it is a wagon).
Moreover, he's got 60k miles on it, and has had the car in for about
14 warranty repairs so far, and they _still_ refuse to replace his
transmission again (they did it once already, but the problem came
back quite quickly).  Subaru has been refusing to honour warranties at
the drop of a hat.  At least they fixed his cold-weather fuel leak on
the second attempt.  Just do your research.  I think the non-WRX
models might be better.  And the WRX is admittedly a blast to drive!

Dave also claims that the AWD power delivery (ie through turns in
snow) isn't nearly as nice as on my car.  Torsens rock.
