With an interference engine, if the timing belt (or timing chain) is to
break, the valves will hit the piston. A non-interference engine's valves
will not hit the piston when the same failure occurs.
Virtually all modern Audi engines are interference designs, due to
the shape of the combustion chamber and the high compression ratio.
