Type 81 and 85 classifications

One sure way to find out - look at the VIN.

Except that the type 81/85 thing has nothing to do with cosmetics.  And, 
it will *never* make sense to us... I can see how the different frame 
set up under the hood could lead to a "type" split between 4 and 5 
cylinder engines, but the difference in the rear of a quattro versus fwd 
  are just as radical.

Of course, it doen't *have* to make sense.  it was done to give us 
something to talk about 20 years later...

Personally, I think *all* the fwd 4000/80's are type 81.  All the 
"special" cars, ie 4kqs, UrQs, and Coupes, are type 85.  Not that that 
makes any real sense, either.  But out of curiosity I just looked up the 
'86 4000 in the family album - under engine, there is a 5 cyl head with 
the designation "> 81 xxx xxx" - meaning, ig there is *any* authority at 
all to the FA, which I seriously doubt, that the 1986 fwd 5 cyl 4000 is 
a type 81.

Just adding more mud to the mire...
