Greg-
Exactly right- the Dunlop Wintersport M2s that are on our A4 1.8T
are now in their fourth season and they are terrible- with the light
snow we had a few days ago in subzero weather, I was not able to go
more than 35-40 mph on the highway, despite tractor trailers coming up
behind me and passing at 60mph. I had very little directional control-
these tires are shot, changing lanes was like driving on ice.

They're still good on dry roads, but the compound is shot. Tread depth
is maybe 1/2 of original.

Your tires may appear to be new; but that does not necessarily mean they

function at peak levels. Really the only reason to buy snow tires is to

steer or brake. With a Q one can get moving with just about bald tires.
Trying to stop the mass of the car or change directions is the key. The

limits of a car with or without ABS is the coefficent of traction. With

great snow tires your ABS may not come on nearly as much. Snow tires
will even help cars with stability control.

I still drive type 89's; no ABS or stability control; so good tires are
a must.
