The Audi Fox was a renamed Audi 80, so not a VW rebadge at all.

The 80 was, in fact, another Audi development, and was introduced in
Europe in 1972 as I recall; the VW Passat (sold here as a Dasher) was
built as a fastback design on the same Audi platform and introduced a
year later. One note is that the 80/Fox wagon was only sold in North
America, South Africa and the UK; everywhere else it was available only
as a Passat Variant.

So if you look at the renaissance of VW in the 1970s, much of it can be
credited to the acquisition of Audi:

- 1970: K70 (original Audi/NSU design)
- 1973: Passat (based on Audi 80)
- 1974: Golf (VW design, styled by Giugiaro)
- 1974: Scirocco (VW design, styled by Giugiaro)
- 1975: Polo (based on Audi 50)

As another poster noted, the later VW Fox was a whole different car.
